Gabriele La Torre

Gabriele La Torre was born in Palermo in 2003, where he lives, works and studies at the Academy of Fine Arts, specialising in visual arts with a focus on painting, drawing and photography. He has taken part in group exhibitions in his home city and across Sicily, as well as collaborating with artists in Milan and Turin.
His painterly practice is rooted in the idea of play as a primal and essential act of artistic representation. Play is understood as a space of absolute freedom, where rules are not negated but reinvented. The artist recognises the most authentic potential of painting: a place where the imagination operates without constraints and the work emerges from a fragile balance between intention and surrender.
In his drawings, the value of the uncontrolled gesture emerges that which the hand retains as a deep-seated memory. Rooted in Sicilian tradition and culture, which he romanticises whilst implying broader, contemporary perspectives, the painter’s imagination is expressed through vivid, brilliant colours that thrive on contrast, between serene harmonies and dynamic tensions. This chromaticism – in which the brushstroke takes place – thus becomes an expression of a pictorial energy that seeks not to explain but to evoke.
For La Torre, the line is the key that unites gesture, colour and form, restoring art to its deepest essence: that of a necessary, free and radically human act, in which the figure emerges through speculation and paradox, control and provocation, uncertainty and freedom, playfulness and seriousness.
